Short on votes, state senators decided Thursday to put off until Tuesday a vote on whether to consider a bill to create a state Department of Administration.
The restructuring bill is a top priority for Gov. Nikki Haley. It would give Haley and future governors more control over the day-to-day operations of state government by creating a new department to handle many of duties of the current state Budget and Control Board.
While the budget board reports to five elected officials, the Administration Department would report directly to the governor. The House, which also would have to agree to take up the bill, is not in session again until Tuesday.
