Plans are a foot to complete construction of Uma Oya which will lead to the development of the Uva and South, within four years.
A special meeting to discuss the progress of the Uma Oya Multipurpose Project was chaired by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. It is planned to complete construction work of Uma Oya in 2015. It will meet the agricultural, drinking water and irrigation needs of the Badulla, Monaragala and Hambantota Districts. The Puhulpola and Dayaramba reservoirs will be constructed and linked to Kirindi Oya. Water from Uma Oya will be diverted through a tunnel which is more than 15 kilometers long.
The project will cost 529 million rupees. The Iranian Government is also assisting in this project. 230 million units of power are expected to be added to the National Grid annually through this project. It will also help irrigate 15 thousand acres of new paddy land. 406 families who will be displaced will be given alternative land. Construction work on access roads is in progress. A group of local as well as Iranian representatives inspected the construction work on the project.
