Russia is to support in oil exploration in the Mannar Basin strengthening Sri Lanka’s awakening economy.
Russia has agreed to start oil and gas exploration in seas off Mannar. The agreement was reached following discussions President Rajapaksa had with the Chairman of the Russian Gas and Oil Company, Gazprom, Alexei Miller yesterday. The discussion was held at the Lenexpo Conference Hall at Saint Petersburg. Mr. Alexei told the President that he was ready to send a group including experts of his company to discuss oil and gas exploration in Mannar. Special attention was drawn to the possibility of using LNG Gas which is more profitable than oil and hydro power. The Gazprom Chairman consented to building an Oil Refinery in Sri Lanka. Many Parliamentarians were present.
Meanwhile the President visited the monument at Pisarevskaya in Leningrad in Saint Petersburg this morning. The monument has been put up where 490 thousand who were killed during the Second World War had been buried. The President paid floral tributes to the monument. More than a million died due to hunger and attacks unleashed by German troops surrounding the city of Saint Petersburg during the Second World War. After offering floral tribute that President visited the museum and also signed the visitor’s book. The Sri Lankan entourage joined this occasion.
