Sri Lanka rejects US summons

Jun 19, 2011 12:38:28 PM - itnnews.lk

The Justice Ministry has rejected the acceptance of Summons issued by a US Court against the President. The US Court had taken action to issue summons on the President based on a case filed by several persons. Justice Secretary Suhada Gamlath said that he had intimated in writing to the United States his decision to reject the Summons.

The Justice Secretary said they have reject the summons issued by a US federal court for President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mr. Gamlath said a state leader of any country cannot be bound in this manner legally. No action can be initiated against him. This has been clearly mentioned.. Accordingly he wrote to the Central Authority in the US that there is no possibility of taking action against the Sri Lankan Head of State. According to powers vested in him, Mr. Gamlath said they have rejected it. This stand is very clear. The summons is linked to three civil cases filed in Washington DC. The summons can be rejected according to international laws.

The Justice Secretary this clearly indicates the aim of putting the country into difficulty and the sinister move to embarrass the state leader.
