Charleston County to consider lowering yacht taxes

Jun 19, 2011 6:29:00 PM - thestate.com
Charleston County officials will consider lowering property taxes on luxury yachts as a way to encourage more owners to pay.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Sunday that the county official in charge of recording property transactions suggested lowering the 10.5 percent tax rate for yachts to 6 percent.

Boats registered in other states are supposed to pay taxes in Charleston County if they're docked there for 180 days. But tax officials say that's too difficult to enforce. Yacht owners can avoid paying by putting to sea on day 179, then returning.

Council chairman Teddie Pryor says the issue will be discussed at the July meeting.

Marina operators complain the tax laws drive some of the most lucrative business to states such as Florida, which has no boat taxes.
