Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says that the Ministry’s investigations unit has collected nearly Rs. 18 million from raids during the month of May.
The Ministry says that 237 incidents of altering electricity meters, using hooks to obtain electricity illegally and other unscrupulous activities have been reported, while 152 of these were of obtaining electricity fraudulently by way of altering electricity meters. The remaining 85 cases have been where hooks had been used to obtain electricity illegally.
According to the Ministry, the raids are aimed that making the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) a profit making establishment that would provide 100% electricity coverage to the entire country by 2012.
