UNP co-deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya is to re-present the Right to Information Bill in parliament this week.
Jayasuriya’s Bill, which was first presented to parliament last September, has been re-listed to be taken up in parliament on Tuesday (21), the local media has reported.
The private member’s Bill has been re-listed following a request made by Jayasuriya from the Speaker.
Jayasuriya first presented the Bill to the House in September, but was withdrawn after the government said a similar piece of legislation would be presented to the House shortly.
Since the government had not yet presented such a Bill, Jayasuriya had requested the Speaker to re-present the Bill.
The Right to Information Bill was mooted during the UNF government in 2003, but was unable to receive parliamentary approval due to the change of government.
