The United Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has stated in its latest statistics that that there are 141, 063 Sri Lankan refugees and 8, 563 Sri Lankan asylum seekers in different countries around the world, but that some of them were returning to the country.
The UNHCR’s Global Trends report on refugees for 2010 has stated that a majority of Sri Lankan refugees and asylum seekers were in India.
The statistics were released to coincide with the World Refugee Day that falls today.
UNHCR Representative, Michael Zwack has said that there were also a number of refugees and asylum seekers in Sri Lanka as well. He has stated that Sri Lanka currently hosts 236 registered refugees and 141 asylum seekers.
According to UNHCR, Sri Lanka is one country refugees are slowly starting to return to after the conflict has ended and some of the refugees in South India have returned to the country.
The UNHCR has stated that currently over 43 million people are displaced by violence around the world.
