A police officer who had received Rs. 300,000 as compensation from a lawsuit has donated the monies to the children’s Cancer Hospital to purchase medical equipment.
Assistant Superintend of Police (ASP) Hettiarachchi Samudrajeewa had received the compensation monies from the former heads of the Presidential Security Division (PSD) SSP Nihal Karunaratne following a court directive.
Samudrajeewa had filed a case in the Colombo High Court claming that then PSD head, SSP Karunaratne had obstructed and threatened him on February 2, 2000 when he was trying to arrest some criminals. The PSD chief had arrived at the scene and threatened Samudrajeewa claiming the criminals had been falsely arrested.
SSP Karunaratne was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 years by the Colombo High Court and Colombo High Court Judge Kumuduni Wickremesinghe had imposed a fine of Rs.25,000 and ordered SSP Karunaratne to pay Rs. 300,000 to Samudrajeewa.
SSP Karunaratne was the head of the PSD during former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge’s tenure.
