Jun 20, 2011 11:23:11 AM - itnnews.lk

The Agriculture Minister has reiterated that rice is not contaminated with Arsenic. Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was speaking at a ceremony organized for the distribution of agricultural implements among 1000 home garden cultivators in the Matara District. The Minister said there was an opinion that rice was contaminated with Arsenic due to the use of chemicals. This was thoroughly investigated. Samples were directed to all accepted laboratories. However, it was found that rice was free from Arsenic. The Agriculture Minister said there was no need to talk about it or conduct further investigations. But some say that rice could be contamined with Arsenic due to the continued use of chemicals. The Minister added that this was the reason why cultivators were being called upon to refrain from using such chemicals.
