The Health Minister has pointed out that the success of the control of mosquito will depend on the support extended by the people. Minister Maithripala Sirisena made this point, joining in the launch of the National Mosquito Control Week.The Minister said the public will be appraised during this week. A responsible role had to be played by the Institutions during this week. Government officials along with security sectors will be visiting every house mainly to safeguard the lives of the inmates. He emphasized that the law will be enforced to the letter without any hesitation if instances of obstructions to the examination of houses are reported. This is a task which could not be discharged alone by the Ministry or its officials. The Health Minister added that public support as well as the cooperation of public and private sector institutions was necessary for the success of this effort. The launch of the programme took place at Nugegoda, under the patronage of the Minister. It is a joint effort by the Presidential Dengue Task Force and the Health Ministry. Various programmes will be held during this week which will last until the 26th of this month. Supervision of the premises for mosquito breeding and awareness programmes are a major part of the programme. The support of the security sectors and civil organization is being received for these programmes. The Ministry has divided the island into seven dengue zones and the programme is conducted in each zone on one day of the week. Legal action has already been taken against those who had neglected the destruction of mosquito breeding grounds. A street drama was held to raise awareness on children on the deadly disease. During the week, special teams will inspect premises for mosquito breeding in 305 MOH divisions throughout the country.
