A Batesburg-Leesville church pastor will spend five months in prison for lying on a veterans benefits form, the U.S. Attorney for South Carolina said.
William C. Padgett, 63, was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Columbia by Judge Cameron McGowan Currie. Padgett also received three years of probation with the first five months after his prison sentence to be served in home detention.
Padgett pleaded guilty earlier this year to fraudulently obtaining disability benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Adminsitration. Padgett claimed he was unable to work because of post-traumatic stress disorder he suffered because of his military service in Vietnam. At the time, he was serving as a church pastor in Batesburg-Leesville and concealing his church salary as expense reimbursements.
