Minister Jagath Pushpakumara has revealed that an island wide plan has been drawn up to expand coconut cultivation.
The Minister said they anticipated to provide two coconut saplings to each Divineguma family. Allocations for this purpose have already been made. Accordingly they desired to plant 1.5 million plants annually. A Divisional Secretariat Division will be selected from every district and will be identified as a “Kapruka Purawara”. The Minister revealed that their target was to generate at least 500 self-employments from each “Kapruka Purawara”.
The Minister was speaking at a news conference in Colombo today. He pointed out that they are planning to direct school children to coconut cultivation in addition to many programmes including the expansion of coconut cultivation in Viharas.
Secretary to the Ministry of Coconut Development and Janatha Estate Development Anura Siriwardena pointed out that the Government was giving a fertilizer subsidy to the value of over 50 million rupees. He said the intention of this programme was to enhance productivity in coconut cultivation. The Ministry Secretary said cultivators did not use fertilizer as the price was very high. Accordingly the Government took the initiative of granting the fertilizer subsidy for coconut cultivation. He revealed that the Government expected to incur an expenditure of more than five billion rupees on the fertilizer subsidy for all crops.
Officials of several institutions including Coconut Research Institution and Coconut Cultivation Board attended this news briefing.
