UNP: Present Commission Reports To The House

Jun 21, 2011 10:19:36 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The UNP today called on the government to present to parliament the reports presented the Mahanama Thilekaratne and Shirani Thilekawardena Commissions.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a press conference today that the Mahanama Thilekaratne report on the recent clash between the police and the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ) workers that resulted in the death of one worker and the Shirani Thilekawardena report on military procurements should be presented to the House.

He charged that the government had appointed various commissions to probe into various issues, but the respective commissions have not yielded any results as the reports have not been made public.

He said that the Thilekaratne report on the FTZ incident is yet unknown as well as the Thilekawardena report on arms deals.

He added that when questioned in parliament about the report on military procurement deals conducted in 2008, Chief Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena had said that details of the report could not be made public due to national security concerns.

According to Attanayake, the government was using national security as an excuse for cover ups when the war has ended over two years ago.
