State officials say a former South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department employee and a former state trooper have been arrested on multiple charges for creating invoices to fake the purchase of more than $500,000 worth of wooden pallets.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said Tuesday that 59-year-old ex-department worker Walter Newton of McColl and 38-year-old former trooper Christopher Russell Logan of Cheraw were booked at the Marlboro County Detention Facility following their arrest on Tuesday. Both Logan and Newton are free on $15,000 bond apiece. It wasn't immediately clear if either man had an attorney.
Warrants say Newton and Logan conspired to defraud the department. According to an affidavit, Logan was paid $504,712 for used wooden pallets, most of which weren't sold, delivered or could be accounted for.
