The government is to introduce an insurance scheme to compensate people attacked by wild elephants.
Agrarian Services and Wilde Minister S.M. Chandrasena has said that the insurance scheme would compensate damages caused to life, property and cultivation.
He has said that the insurance scheme would be a joint venture by the Wildlife Trust Fund and the Agriculture Insurance Board.
The decline in the country’s forest cover has resulted in wild elephants entering into villages creating a human-elephant conflict.
However, Chandrasena has said that the government is now looking at methods to minimize the human-elephant conflict.
