UNP Allege Corruption In The Cricketing Scene

Jun 22, 2011 11:16:49 AM - thesundayleader.lk

The UNP has alleged that the company that is organizing the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) in July this year had been registered only after receiving the rights to organize the tournament.

UNP Badulla District parliamentarian Harin Fernando told a press conference today that corruption has taken over the cricketing sector in the country.

He said there were doubts over the authenticity of the agreement with the Singapore based Somerset Entertainment Ventures to organize the SLPL since the company had been registered only after receiving the rights for the tournament.

He also said that the corrupt nature of the whole tournament has been made worse by the involvement of Lalith Modi in the SLPL after being removed from the Indian Premier League due to allegations of corruption.

Fernando further noted that broadcasting rights of the SLPL has been given to a private network owned by a VIP politician’s son.

According to Fernando, there was a lack of transparency with regard to the income and expenditure of the recently concluded Cricket World Cup.
