New law requires SC DOT to list railroad crossings

Jun 23, 2011 4:09:00 AM - thestate.com
A new South Carolina law named after a 16-year-old who died in a train wreck in July 2009 requires the state transportation agency to list all railroad crossings on its Web site.

The law signed by Gov. Nikki Haley is named for John Brabham III. The Sumter County teen was killed by an oncoming train at an intersection that lacked crossing arms.

John Brabham Jr. says phone records show his son wasn't texting or talking, and it was early afternoon. He hopes the bill raises awareness to the dangers.

The teen's friends sought a bill requiring the agency to install arms at every crossing. His father says he knew that wasn't economically possible.

The law directs the agency to install the gates and signals when money becomes available.
