The delicate job of righting the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley in South Carolina is nearing completion following some delays.
Work to right the vessel began Wednesday and is now expected to be completed Friday. The job was slowed Thursday when a laser monitoring system had to be readjusted and the submarine's bow dipped. Workers had to get it level again.
Turning the Hunley upright will reveal the sub's entire hull for the first time since it sank in 1864 and that may provide clues as to why it sank.
The Hunley came to rest on its side at a 45-degree angle after sinking off Charleston and was raised in that position 11 years ago The Hunley is the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship..
