Several government institutions have requested for state lands to implement various development projects.
The performance report of the Land Ministry that has been tabled in parliament states that 18 government institutions have requested for 1,631 hectares to implement development projects by August 2010.
The report states that the Highway and Road Development Ministry had applied for 196 hectares, Irrigation and Water Management Ministry for 652 hectares, Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Ministry for 668 hectares and the Defence Ministry for 29 hectares in 2010.
The Treasury has reportedly allocated Rs. 811 million for the payment of compensation in the land acquisition process.
Some of the projects that have required the acquisition of land are the Uma Oya Project, construction of the Colombo-Kandy Expressway and Tourism Zones in Kalpitiya.
