SC nonprofit to honor 2 female politicians

Apr 16, 2010 4:07:00 AM - thestate.com
A nonprofit that seeks to help women get elected in South Carolina is honoring the state's former schools superintendent and a former legislator.

The Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics is holding a fundraising dinner on Friday in Columbia.

Former state schools chief Inez Tenenbaum was the only female in statewide office during her two terms. The Democrat did not seek re-election in 2006 and was confirmed last June as head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Sherry Shealy Martschink was the nation's youngest legislator when first elected in 1970 from Lexington, just eight days after turning 21. The Republican served two terms in the House. A decade later, she was elected to the Senate from Mount Pleasant, where she served with her father.
