A South Carolina man was in jail Thursday charged with killing his wife, after her family worked eight months to get police to listen to their children's descriptions of the father hurting the mother.
Vander Simmons Jr., 33, was charged with murder and had not yet had a bail hearing, a worker at the Marlboro County Detention Center said Thursday. There was no information to indicate whether Simmons has an attorney.
The charge came five days after investigators exhumed the body of 33-year-old Brandy Simmons. The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Saturday that her family pressured investigators to reopen the case.
"You don't know how hard I worked on this," Brandy's sister Vickie White said, "trying to get somebody to believe the children, trying to get somebody to help."
Vicki and her mother, Cornelia White, turned to politicians and the media when they could not get police to pursue Brandy's death as a crime.
