No dangerous jobs for children under 18 years of age

Laws preventing the deployment of children below 18 years of age in dangerous jobs will be enforced to the letter. The Government reiterate it will severely punish those who transgress the law. The deployment of children below 18 years of age in dangerous jobs is a punishable offence. But it has been found that the law is being violated on certain instances. As such the Government has taken initiatives to enforce the law to the letter. Accordingly amendments were made to the related Act in March this year. Accordingly provisions have been made to totally ban the deployment of children below 18 years of age in 51such identified jobs. Briefing the media in Colombo today Minister Gamini Lokuge said that Sri Lanka remained at a satisfactory level on engaging children below 18 years of age in dangerous jobs in comparison to other South Asian countries.
