Regulations on food are to be made more stringent with effect from tomorrow. All activities which cause an alteration to the quality or appearance of food items which is harmful to the health will be banned from tomorrow. Accordingly this ban will be in affect for all aspects of production, storage, packaging, transportation, importation, marketing and sale of food items. The Ministry of Health states that this ban has been imposed under Article 32 of the Food Act number 26 of 1980. Minister Maithripala Sirisena said this decision had been reached after taking into consideration complaints submitted by the public in this respect. Instructions have been given to Public Health Inspectors to enforce the law to the letter against any person who does not abide by the new regulations.
