A seven-year Richland County Sheriff’s deputy was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland with serious injuries after a wreck near Shaw Air Force Base that killed the other driver.
Sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson said the senior deputy, who lives in Sumter County, was on duty and heading into Richland County for a court appearance when his patrol car collided with another vehicle. The wreck occured around 10:20 a.m. on US 76 at SC 441.
Sumter resident Philip T. Hawkins, 67, died instantly from head injuries in the wreck, Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck, including performing a reconstruction that is blocking US 76, Cpl. Bryan McDougald said. Traffic is being rerouted to SC 265.
The reconstruction will address unknowns in the collision. For now, McDougald could only say that the deputy was westbound on US 76 in a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria and Hawkins, driving a Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle, was heading south on SC 441. The collision took place in the crossing, which is controlled by a traffic signal.
