Facilities at the Tangalle Base Hospital have been upgraded. It has received an Initial Treatment Unit.
The Unit had been provided with assistance from South Korea. It was received at a special request made by First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and the mediation of Deputy Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena. The Korean International Health Treatment Foundation had expended 180 million rupees on this unit. It includes two wards with 36 beds and other facilities including a Surgical Theatre. Expressing his views Deputy Minister Gunawardena said many modern equipment had also been provided. He revealed of plans to send doctors and technicians to Korea for further training.
