Protect country’s future from economic slaughterers – President

President Rajapaksa has pointed out that the country’s future had to be protected from economic slaughterers. He was speaking at the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Peoples Bank.

The President recalled how the Bank became bankrupt. No one has forgotten the era in which a proposal was floated to sell the Bank. The bank had to tread a long journey preventing from economic slaughterers. He reminded that no one should forget there was a group of people which was spreading rumors that the country was going bankrupt and the economy was shattering. The President opined that he considered the present situation prevailing as a strength surpassing an era in which the world economy was facing a crunch and workers being fired out. He noted that he believed that the Bank would receive the necessary strength and courage to serve the public more closely within the next 50 years.

The Anniversary Celebrations of the Peoples Bank were held at Temple Trees under the patronage of the President. The President said that the Peoples Bank should make determined effort to provide a significant service to suit the next 50 years identifying the needs of the people. A special 1000 rupee commemorative coin produced by the Central Bank was released today to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Peoples Bank. Central Bank governor Ajith Nivard Cabral presented the commemorative coin to the President. A commemorative stamp and a first day cover were also issued. The Anniversary Souvenir and a book on the 50 years service were also handed over to the President. Finance Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara and Peoples Bank Chairman W. Karunajeewa were among the other speakers. Many Parliamentarians and Senior Government Officials were present.
