Strict measures will be taken against salt manufacturers who do not adhere to proper standards.
The Health Ministry has decided to take strict measures against producers and marketers if the iodine content in salt is not between 15 to 30 percent. In surveys carried out by the Ministry it has come to light that the usage of iodized salt has dropped to 68 percent from 90 percent. Deficiency of iodine leads to a number of diseases. A discussion was held at the Ministry to find solutions for this problem. It was advised to compulsorily blend salt with iodine when being manufactured. This task is being carried out by the Salt Corporation and private manufacturers. The Government has provided all facilities in this connection. The Health Ministry has bestowed the Public Heath Inspectors with powers to take legal action against those who sell substandard salt.
