The Buthgamuwa Bridge along the Colombo – Avissawella Road which was an obstacle for the operation of vehicles for three years has been opened after a five-day modernization programme. The earlier bridge was in a dilapidated condition. As such vehicles operated only on one lane. This resulted in heavy traffic congestion, causing immense hardship to the public. As such immediate action was taken to repair the bridge. The road was closed for traffic for one week. But it was possible to complete the repairs within five days. The expenditure incurred was 35 million rupees. Parliamentarian Duminda Silva had given instructions to get down parts of the bridge from Britain and complete the installation within five days. Accordingly, the Road Development Authority completed the work and reopened the bridge for traffic last afternoon.
