The resettlement of the displaced in the Jaffna Peninsula has been completed. The final stage of resettling families displaced in the humanitarian operations to eliminate terrorism from the Jaffna Peninsula was launched under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa. 1,110 persons of 297 families displaced in the Pokkarippu, Mulliayan and Vettilaikerni Grama Nialadari Divisions coming under the Maradankerni Divisional Secretariat Division in Vadamarachchi East have been resettled. They were provided with the required facilities, kitchen utensils and school gear. New houses built by the Army for 10 poor families selected from the Pokkarippu village were handed over to the recipients. A cooperative outlet was also opened for their benefit. The Maradankerni–Nagarkovil Road via Point Pedro which was closed due to landmines and booby traps was reopened after de-minning. Two buses were deployed for operation on this road. Minister Douglas Devananda, Northern Governor G.A. Chandrasiri and Jaffna Commanding Officer Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe were present.
