New Police Chief assumes duties

New Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon assumes duties. He becomes Sri Lanka’s 33rd Police Chief. A special ceremony was organized at the Police Headquarters in Colombo on behalf of Mr. Ilangakoon’s assumption of duties. The ceremony included a Guard of Honour. Assuming office after the conduct of religious observances, he addressed his officials. Thereafter addressing the media after assuming office, the new Police Chief said his prime objective was to build a professional and efficient Police Service. The new Police Chief said it is incorrect to brand all officers as corrupt. The entire police had been branded so due to mistakes committed a handful. He said he would take all appropriate measures to overcome this situation. He also revealed of his desire to make the Police a disciplined force. Mr. Ilangkoon stressed the need to strengthen the relationship between the police and the public so that public will have confidence in the Police. Mr. Ilangakoon was born on 12th April 1956 at Pinnawala in Balangoda. He had his academic studies at the Udagama Maha Vidyalaya in Balangoda. Mr. Ilangakoon is a Graduate of the Colombo University and has obtained the Post Graduate in Criminology and Management from the University of Great Britain. He joined the Police Service in 1982 and was appointed as a Senior DIG in 2009.
