The National Zoological Gardens at Dehiwala marks its 75th anniversary. It was first established as a private zoo in 1926 and remained under a foreigner for 10 years. Thereafter in 1936 it was acquired by the Government. Since then it was gradually developed. The Dehiwala Zoo is one of the finest and largest in Asia displaying around 350 species of animals in a 24-acre land in the outskirts of Colombo city. The Zoo was an impetus for local as well as foreign visitors and for those carrying out research on animals, during this period. There are visitors to the Zoo almost all days of the year. The Ministry of Economic Development said that 1.2 billion rupees has been allocated for developments to the National Zoo. These include improvements in four internal roads, construction of a three story building for the care of young animals, fixing of the main underground water tank, last phase of open elephant park, reptiles’ park and the construction of staff quarters. All night Pirith chanting has been organized to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Zoo.
