Army security is being provided to Kahawatta. People’s demonstrations demanding the apprehension of the murderer of elderly women has ended. The people of Kahawatta and surrounding areas were disturbed after the killing of seven elderly women. People in their thousands gathered in the Kahawatta town today and demonstrated demanding the immediate arrest of the criminals. Movement of traffic along the Colombo – Embilipitiya Road came to a complete halt due to the protest while long queues of vehicles were seen. Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne and Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekera arrived at the scene and assured full army security to the area. The security programme is already in place from this afternoon on the instructions of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Accordingly the protest came to a halt and movement of vehicles on the highway returned to normality. The demonstrators accused the Kahawatta Police of not taking appropriate measures with regard to the killings. The CID has unveiled a special inquiry.
