The Minister of Petroleum Industries assured in Parliament today that they would look into the payment of compensation to vehicles damaged as a result of using substandard petrol. Susil Premajayantha said that it was intended to pay the compensation based on recommendations of a Tripartite Committee appointed to look into the inferior quality of petrol. The Minister told the House that he summoned the Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation and all other officials concerned and took several important decisions. He advised the Corporation Chairman to look into whether the standard of the 20,000 tons of oil matched with the standard of the oil stocks they possessed and whether it was issued without looking into this situation. At the same time, he also instructed him to examine whether the normal tender procedure was adhered to for the import of this stock, and also to look into the damages that have resulted to the Corporation, as well as private property. Accordingly the Minister stated that he took a decision to suspend payments for this oil stock until the inquiries were completed.
