A petition has been filed in the Appeals Court calling for the suspension of payment of pensions for those living abroad without dual citizenship.
The petition has been filed by the Janasetha Peramuna leader the Ven. Battaramulle Seelaratana Thera. The prelate had mentioned in his petition that more than 12,000 Sri Lankans living abroad were drawing pensions without obtaining dual citizenship. The petitioner states that the Government was incurring an expenditure of more than 3.5 billion rupees in this respect. The prelate called on the Appeals Court to issue an edict suspending the payment of these pensions to minimize such expenditure which is a burden to the national economy.
