Rice produced in Sri Lanka is suitable for consumption. According to scientists, local rice had the least amount of Arsenic when compared with rice produced in other countries.
A special discussion was organized at the Prime Minister’s Office with regard to views expressed on the contamination of local rice with Arsenic. The discussion chaired by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne was attended by scientists of many institutions including the Industrial Technology Institute, the Peradeniya University, the World Health Organization, the Agricultural Ministry, the Sri Lanka Standards Institution and the research team of the Kelaniya University.
