Rice produced in Sri Lanka is suitable for consumption. According to scientists, local rice had the least amount of Arsenic when compared with rice produced in other countries.

A special discussion was organized at the Prime Minister’s Office with regard to views expressed on the contamination of local rice with Arsenic. The discussion chaired by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne was attended by scientists of many institutions including the Industrial Technology Institute, the Peradeniya University, the World Health Organization, the Agricultural Ministry, the Sri Lanka Standards Institution and the research team of the Kelaniya University.

They pointed out at this discussion that naturally there was a slight percentage of Arsenic in food consumed by the people. They said it was not harmful to mankind. Researchers of the Kelaniya University said that they had not on any occasion mentioned that that rice consumption was harmful to the people. They emphasized that their statements had been distorted.

The Prime Minister said it was more appropriate in future to release to the people information obtained after improving the research methods.
