Alms were offered to 3000 members of the Maha Sangha at the Dalada Maligawa, under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. The Mahanayake Thera advised the President not to be deterred by foreign influences.
The President paid obeisance at the Sri Dalada Maligawa early this morning. He also seized the opportunity to converse with devotees present at the Maligawa. The President called on the Malwatte Mahanayake, the Most Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera at the Malwatte Vihare and inquired into his well being. Thereafter, he called on the Asgiriya Mahanayake, the Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera. The Mahanayakes told the President that he had the blessings of the Maha Sangha for the programmes mooted by him for national unity and development of the country. The Asgiri Mahanayake pointed out that the President should receive the blessing of all parties to carry forward the programmes mooted for the future of the country, surmounting all challenges.
In the meantime, alms were offered to 3000 monks at the historic Mahamaluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The Pinkama was organized by the Thraishika Meditation Centre of Thailand in view of the 2600th Sambudhathva Jayanthi. The aim of the Pinkama was to invoke blessing on King Bhumibol of Thailand for his 84th birthday and also President Rajapaksa, his Government and the people of Sri Lanka. Among those who joined on this occasion were members of the Maha Sangha including the Asgiriya Mahanayake Thera and a deputation including Therani Thachi Dheerapon and Buddhist monks of the Thraishika Meditation Centre of Thailand. In a special Anusasana, the Deputy Registrar of the Asigriya Chapter, the Ven. Narampanawe Ananda Thera invoked blessings on the President for providing an opportunity for granting religious freedom, by liberating the country from terrorism. The Ven. Dr. Somchai Thera of Thailand also delivered an Anusasana. The President offered Pirikara to the Maha Sangha after the offering of alms to the Sangha. It was followed by the presentation of Buddha statues brought from Thialand to the Mahanayake and Anunayake Theras. The Maha Sangha chanted Jaya Pirith and invoked blessings on everyone including the President.
Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath and the Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela were present on the occasion.
