Lightning strikes apparently caused multiple structure fires in Lexington County Wednesday afternoon as a line of thunderstorms passed through the Midlands.
The fires were reported in the Pine Grove-Oak Grove area of Lexington County shortly before 3 p.m., and Chief Eddie Turner of the Lexington County Fire Service said firefighters still were working at least one house fire at 4 p.m.
The storm dumped .98 inches of rain on the nearby Columbia Metropolitan Airport between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., and a peak wind gust of 58 mph was recorded at the airport.
Trees were reported down in the road near the intersection of Barnwell Road and White Knoll Road, not far from the house fires.
Trees also were reported across River Road near Lake Wateree in Fairfield County.
