Lightning strikes caused multiple structure fires in Lexington County Wednesday afternoon as a line of thunderstorms passed through the Midlands.
The fires in the Pine Grove-Oak Grove area of Lexington County broke out around 2:30 p.m., causing heavy damage to one house but no injuries, according to Charles Wessinger, battalion chief for the Lexington County Fire Service. The fire service reported 30 calls, including several structure fires, vehicle accidents and downed power lines.
The storm dumped .98 of an inch of rain on the nearby Columbia Metropolitan Airport between 2 and 3 p.m., and a peak wind gust of 58 mph was recorded at the airport.
Trees were reported down on roads in Fairfield, Lexington and Richland counties.
Standing water was reported on roads across the Midlands, and there were early evening reports of power outages.
