The Agrarian Services Minister has revealed of a fertilizer scam that has taken place in the country.
Agrarian Services Minister S.M. Chandrasena has told parliament that 5525.245 metric tons of fertilizer purchased from the Colombo Fertilizer Company at Rs 630 million to be distributed among the farmers at subsidized rated had not been sent to Agrarian Services Centers.
The Agrarian Services Centers located island wide distributes the subsidized fertilizer among the farmers according to the Mahinda Chinthana programme.
Chandrasena has made this revelation in response to an oral question posed by JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Minister has said that there had been deficiencies in the stocks of fertilizer when compared with the stock purchased and distributed. There had been a deficiency of 4,591,545 metric tons of urea, 362 metric tons of T.S.P. and 571,650 metric tons of MOP fertilizer.
However, the Minister has added that the persons responsible for the scam have been taken into custody following a CID investigation.
