The government says arrangements would be made to appoint a new Auditor General to the Auditor General’s Department since the work scope of the Department has seen an increase in the past two years.
The post has been vacant since August 26, 2010.
Chief Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has said that the Senior Deputy Auditor General had been acting in the post since it fell vacant and that a new Auditor General would be appointed shortly.
Gunawardena has said that the Auditor General’s Department suffered from a severe staff shortage, which has been addressed with the recruitment of 354 audit examiners in July last year.
Nevertheless, the Minister has said that vacancies existed in almost all the ranks at the Department.
According to Gunawardena, there has been an expansion in the Department’s activities due to the auditing of state institutions in the Northern andEasternProvinces.
