The UNP has said that despite an assurance by Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha, the government had paid for the 20,000 metric tons of sub standard fuel that was imported last month.
UNP Spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathileka said the party has reliably learnt that the payment for the fuel consignment had been made.
He told a press conference that the state officials who were responsible for importing the fuel had not been dealt with.
He said that action against these officials should have been taken according to the Establishment Code and that government officers charged with an offence should be sent on no pay leave and also prohibit them from going overseas.
According to Karunathileka, the government has dealt in an unethical manner in relation to the Petroleum Ministry officials and the former IGP Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya, who has been given a diplomatic posting after he retired over the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ) attack.
