A 23-year-old firefighter who had just joined the Columbia-Richland Fire Department was seriously injured by two vehicles, including one that left the scene, as he rode his bicycle Tuesday before sunrise on Bluff Road.
After the first, unidentified vehicle hit bicyclist Travis Kinley, a Ford Contour driven by 27-year-old Andrew K. Wininger struck him, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said.
Kinley was brought to Palmetto Health Richland hospital in critical condition after the 5:45 a.m. collisions on Bluff Road near Blair Street at the edge of the Arthurtown neighborhood, Chief Aubrey Jenkins said.
Kinley was wearing a helmet, had reflective material on his clothing and had a flashing strobe light on the back of the bike, Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said. The patrol had no information on the vehicle that hit the firefighter but called in its accident reconstruction team, which is seeking evidence to identify the vehicle.
Jenkins said Kinley could not recall the collisions when the chief spoke with the battered firefighter Tuesday morning at the hospital. “He told me he was in pain,” Jenkins said. “He can barely remember anything. He was kind of groggy.”
