50 million US Dollars is to be spent on a programme to minimize landslides. This has been revealed by the Disaster Management Minister.
The Minister said that their intention was not to look after the victims and give them food and drink after they are struck by a disaster. More attention was being directed to preventing such disasters. This project has been prepared to minimize disasters. The estimated cost is 50 million US Dollars. It was submitted to the Cabinet. The Cabinet nod was granted for the proposal and the Foreign Resources Department was working on it. The Minister was confident that the project could be launched by the beginning of next year. He said this would ensure to save many lives and property from disasters.
The Minister was speaking at the launch of the new website of the National Buildings Research Organization. The introduction of an apparatus to measure the compression energy worth 10 million rupees took place under the patronage of the Minister. The new website will give information on warnings of landslides and the nature of landslides. Information on areas prone to landslides has also been included in the website. Additional Secretary of the Disaster Management Ministry Gamini Rajakaruan and Director General of the National Buildings Research Organization Asiri Karunawardena were present on this occasion.
