The Canadian Government is suspicious that a group of illegal Sri Lankan Tamil migrants nabbed by Indonesian authorities was destined for Canada.
Canadian Minister for Immigration Jason Kenny said all indications were that the final destination of the group may have been Canada, although they claimed that they were bound for New Zealand. Indonesian authorities last Saturday arrested the group comprising 90 Tamil asylum seekers. 87 of them had rejected leaving the ship demanding refugee status in New Zealand. However, New Zealand has turned down this request.
The New Zealand Government emphasized that there was no room for Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers in the country. It said they would be arrested if they attempted to forcibly enter the country. Tranquil conditions are prevailing in Sri Lanka. As such the Canadian Immigration Minister said Tamil civilians had no issues in living in Sri Lanka. Earlier a ship carrying illegal migrants was seized by the Canadian authorities in their sea limits.
