Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has referred to a programme to provide uncultivated state land to unemployed children of tea and rubber smallholders. Its purpose is to empower these young men and women.
The Minister said there will be more opportunities in the future to enhance their earnings, as his Ministry was helping the tea and rubber smallholders. They were looking into the availability of barren land in big estates. He revealed of plans to distribute uncultivated land among the educated children of the smallholders. He said this will enable them to earn an income.
The Minister was speaking at the commissioning of the Ellakanda Electrification Scheme in Pannila. About 100 families will benefit by this scheme. A group of peoples’ representatives including Western Provincial Councillor Piyal Nishantha was present.
