President Rajapaksa has instructed officials to be prepared to purchase the Yala harvest. He told them to immediately draw up the required programme.
The President issued these instructions when the Ministerial Sub Committee on Food Security and Cost of Living Control met at Temple Trees. Vegetable production has increased due to the Divi Neguma Programme. The President told them to identify locations which require storage facilities to preserve vegetables and fruits and inform him. By next month, the paddy harvest of the Yala season will reach the market from the Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa areas.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa told the committee to craft a streamlined programme to protect the farmer. The Sub committee agreed to converse with the prices of milk power with importing companies. Discussions centred on the progress of granting facilities for the use of plastic containers in the transport of vegetables and fruits. Advisor to the Sub Committee Janaki Kuruppu said that the IMF had pointed out that inflation within this year could decelerate to about seven percent. Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Senior Minister P. Dayaratne, Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Johnston Fernando and Jagath Pushpakumara and Deputy Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena and many senior Government officials were present.
