Minister Basil Rajapaksa has said that the effort of the Government was to continuously safeguard the economic growth achieved after the victory over terrorism and accelerate it. Sri Lanka has achieved a higher economic growth after the military victory. Even a considerable growth has been recorded in the tourism sector. Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that Sri Lanka’s economic growth was outstanding when compared with other countries. The Minister was addressing journalists on the activities of the Economic Development Ministry. Sri Lanka has achieved a growth in her economy despite the global downturn. The Minister said this achievement is of special significance in the face of various global negative influences, including the deprivation of the GSP facility. Sri Lanka had been able to achieve the highest economic growth within the last 60 years. The lowest unemployment percentage has been received after the freedom won by the country. Another notable factor is the stability maintained by the Sri Lankan rupee. Pointing out that Sri Lanka did not earlier have the required foreign reserves to import goods, the Minister revealed that the country’s foreign reserves now stood at seven billion US Dollars. Accordingly, the Minister clarified that the Foreign Reserves were strong enough not only to import goods for several months but a number of years. Sri Lanka now has a growth in her economy to the satisfaction of everyone. A vast growth in every sector of the economy has been achieved. Every Ministry made a vital contribution for this achievement. As an example he cited the Divi Neguma Programme. 23 Minister joined in the Divi Neguma Programme. As a result, Minister Rajapaksa said a notable economic growth had been achieved.
