The Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Esala Maha Sisu Perahera was held on a grand scale today. President Rajapaksa joined in viewing the Perahera. Around 12,000 children participated in this colourful Perahera. It started from the premises of Lumbini College in Colombo. The Perahera wended its way along Havelock Road up to the Sri Sambudhatva Jayanthi Mandiraya. The President joined in welcoming the Perahera from the Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi precincts. Also present were members of the Maha Sangha including the Ven. Kirama Wimalajothi Thera, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne and Parliamentarians, including Minister Bandula Gunawardena. The Perahera from the premises of Lumbini School reached the Sambuddhatva Jyanthi premises after passing a number of schools including Isipathana College. The Perahera was organized to commemorate the 2600th Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi. There were many elephants in addition to about 450 cultural pageants presented by the school children. The Lord Buddha preached his first Dharma doctrine on a day like today. Student monks chanted the “Dhammacakkappavattana Sutra”, reminiscing the event.
