Forty-two years before Chicago welcomed the space pioneers, the city went wild for aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh. Lucky Lindy made his historic solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in May 1927. He visited the Windy City on Sunday, Aug. 13, 1927, to promote commercial air travel. The Tribune reported that he was all business. "In the face of screaming holiday mobs, hero worshiping boys and girls and men and women, fluttering of confetti, and every exultant noise and display that Chicago could produce, Lindy stuck to his purpose. … Three times he had an opportunity to speak to the public and every word he spoke had to do with the development of flying."
